What Is Venetian Plaster?

What it's made of

Traditional Venetian plaster is a blend of slaked lime putty and finely crushed marble dust, mixed with natural pigments for color. Modern formulations may include acrylic binders for durability, but the look and feel come from the lime and marble — minerals that harden over time and develop a soft, glass-like polish when burnished.

How it's applied

1. Surface prep. Walls are skimmed and primed to a flat, clean substrate.
2. Base coat. A thin first layer of plaster is troweled on and allowed to dry.
3. Layering. Two to four additional coats are applied in short, overlapping strokes — this is what builds the cloud-like depth and movement.
4. Burnishing. Once cured, the final surface is polished with a clean steel trowel, bringing out a soft sheen and the characteristic stone-like glow.
5. Optional wax or sealer. A natural wax can be added in wet areas (bathrooms, kitchens) for water resistance.
